for tuning in. tonight's lead, no hiding from biden. for months mitt romney and paul ryan have been running from their records, hiding their extreme far right agenda behind platitudes and big promises, trying to pin them down on specifics was like trying to nail jello to the wall. but that all stopped last night. we'll talk about all of it in the show tonight, how vice president biden took the fight to paul ryan on issue after issue. on taxes, on medicare, on abortion, on their plan to privatize social security and to gut medicare. joe biden simply dismantled the romney/ryan world view. but also talk about how the right wingers are trying to make a big deal out of joe biden's smile. so what? i would have been outright laughing in paul ryan's face. joe biden was fed up and who could blame him? >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey. >> and why is that so? >> because not a single thing he said is accurate. >> this is a bunch of stuff. >> what do you mean a bunch of stuff? >> it's simply inaccurate. >> it's irish. >> thanks for the translation. okay. >> malarkey. a bunch of stuff.
, watching romney tell those untruths, i believe he had to do some of that because the only thing paul ryan was doing was complementing what romney was doing, which was lying. so i believe biden had to interrupt because there were times when things ryan was saying did not make any sense. the 47%, they cannot clarify the that this really has hurt a lot of people by what they have said and they cannot live up to that. then president obama gets in office the first day and the republicans say we will do everything we can to make sure you are one-term president. how can you get things done when on your first day they refuse to help him? it's not like he can come across the aisle. they have already dropped him. americans need to wake up and see that this is just a thing where the republicans will make sure they say or do whatever they can to make sure obama is not elected. he has done things for the republican side of america as well as the democratic side. host: we will leave it there and move on to michael in columbus, georgia, on our mitt romney line. caller: house is going -- how is it going?
been looking forward to. this shows romney ryan surge after the first presidential debate is taking place. peter doocy is live with more on this. >>> you are right. the romney ryan ticket road the debate performance to the lead in the latest fox news poll of likely voters. before the debate the massachusetts governor and current wisconsin congressman trailed the president and vice president 43-48. they were down 5. now they are up one. the lead is even larger with critical independent voters. romney ryan were down 4 to romney biden but now they were up 12 with 44 percent with democratic side 32 percent. another key number are the voters were unsure they want somebody else. that number shot up 6 points after the debate. the debates have the potential to move the needle quite a bit. with four weeks to go joe biden has been prepping for his in delaware with chris van holland playing ryan. the president handicapped tonight's big show down. >> joe just needs to be joe. congressman ryan is a smart and effective seeker but his ideas are the wrong ones. >> ryan has a chance to let voters de
that paul ryan and mitt romney are stumping there today. >> i'm curious, mike, why the president isn't able to just stay in the white house. is it because the oval office duties beckon too much? or does he go to virginia because he wants to do a campaign stop here and there? >> reporter: i think it's got a lot to do with it. it's a two-fer. there are no public events on the president's schedule in virginia. there were no events in nevada we were told about. but he did go to hoover dam, has photo ops. so it's a side benefit. it's like a camp, a retreat where they can concentrate on what they need to do tuesday night. >> i wonder if he's planning like a five guys outing, you know? >> reporter: could be. he loves his burgers. no questions. >> before i let you go, mike, can i just ask you, the ten or of things going into this debate prep? how stressful do you sense the white house is about this when you combine both the president's performance last week and then joe biden's this? maybe it picked up a little bit they think with joe biden. >> i think there's a sense of relief that biden did what
? was there a time you didn't have a lot of money? is that because you have bad character? if i were the romney/ryan campaign i would probably try to trash that reporter too. but that wasn't all that happened here. >> if you take a look at the gun laws we have, i don't think president obama is proposing more gun laws. we have strong gun laws. >> that's news too. it's especially news in light of the fact that it the nra is currently running these ads in a bunch of swing states. it's a huge ad buy too. they say chipping away at your right, chipping away at your freedom. now they are attacking our second amendment rights. you can stop them right now. defend freedom. defeat obama. that's what the ads say. but then there's paul ryan, the republican vice presidential nominee saying president obama is not proposing any attack on gun rights. he's not proposing anymore gun laws. that's true. the only gun-related changes in law we have had from president obama have been expansions of gun rights. but the republicans are not supposed to admit that. not when the nra is running this scary ad camp

[laughter] i make those charts you see on television. if you don't have to wonder it is me talking. what you see is what you get. if you do no
ryan's second trip to the state of michigan as the vice presidential nominee. even though mitt romney, the guy at the top of the republican ticket has not visited michigan since august and the republican party has yet to run a single ad in michigan, at this rally paul ryan was very enthusiastic and very optimistic about his republican side's chances. >> it's getting closer in michigan. you can help push us over the top. you can deliver this. we can do it here. >> if that was the high point of paul ryan's day in michigan, the low point definitely came earlier that same day in an interview with an award-winning local report from flint, michigan. terry camp, and mr. camp introduced his interview like this. >> i wanted to ask him about the gun violence in our cities. let's listen. this did not end well. >> gun violence and gun policy have not been big issues in the presidential campaign thus far and that probably makes sense. the president's record is signing a bill that allowed people to carry guns in national parks and another allowing people to carry guns on amtrak. which might come in
romney-ryan tech set about? >> absolutely. joe biden foras asplasid as obama was the other night, biden will be as tough. he's going to throw out red meat and go after ryan on his stance on abortion, women's issues. he's going to hit the social issues and it's going to be about foreign policy, which ryan has very, very limited experience. >> and medicare. i imagine he will try to deliver what obama didn't, the message that, in their opinion, the republicans are going to mess with medicare, right? >> by the end of the debate, the the world will assume that paul rysunis spending the $716 million of medicare money. it won't continue to be obama and biden will make sure that happens. >> but he has a propensity for putting his foot in his mouth? >> that is what makes it great television. you don't know what is going to happen or he's going to say. >> great television. okay. [ laughter ] this is civics, okay in. >> for political views, it's great television. >> and this is such an incredible contrast in age. >> yeah. >> ryan looks like he's 25 and biden looks like he's three times 25. so, it'
can't attack. he has to defend. if it had gone well, he could have attacked ryan and romney. now he has to defend the president. >> well, i disagree completely because here's the problem with that. this mitt romney's the same mitt romney that we've known for the last six or seven months, the same mitt romney that voters very cautious with the last six or seven months. it's not about defending the president, it's about taking the fight to mitt romney making them defend, that fantasy show he put on during the other debate where he made stuff up and didn't know his own tax plan, making them stick to what they've been the last six or seven months. >> this is where i think paul ryan will have pressure on him and where i expect paul ryan to perform very well. i mean, i found obama's debate performance totally lacking in specifics. we still don't know what his tax plan is or his deficit plan or his budget plan. but paul ryan has become the personification for the democrats of all that is callous and cold and evil about the romney campaign. so ryan now has i think an opportunity to not only
think part of reminding people about big bird does, how ridiculous the rhetoric from the romney/ryan campaign is, but also the idea that, so, you're going to cut something that we know is effective and works and helps our kids prepare for the future, but you're going to continue to give subsidies to big oil? that doesn't make sense. so, i do think that there is a seriousness to this conversation and i think biden is the kind of guy who can bring that right balance to the debate. >> all right, so, one thing in an interview, congressman ryan did talk about his nerves playing into effect for thursday. take a look. >> joe biden's one of the best debaters we've seen in modern politics. he's been doing this for 40 years. he ran for president twice, he's the sitting vice president. it's my first time on the national stage like this, so i'm playing -- >> nervous? >> sure, of course i'm a little nervous. everybody's nervous about something like this. i bet joe biden's a little nervous. >> joe, i want to ask you about this. he will be a formidable opponent as far as knowing the inside baseball
is turning up the heat. romney and paul ryan are on the campaign trail in swing states. we have a live picture from ohio where paul ryan is taking the stage. mitt romney' foreign policy speech is making waves. >> mitt romney shifted his focus today to foreign policy. >> policies have not been able to the best examples of world leadership. nowhere is this more evident than in the middle east. >> the romney campaign is trying to reverse the tide on this issue after some of his recent perceived missteps including his initial response to the attack on the consulate in libya. used today's speech to keep up his criticism of the obama administration. he had a bit of a swagger. he is riding a wave of momentum from last week's debate. the poll taken after the denver showdown has the race tied among registered voters. president obama had a five-point advantage three days leading into the debate. voters overwhelmingly said ann romney won the debate. that is the biggest debate when ever recorded by gallup bigger than bill clinton's over george bush. president obama is expected to raise more than $
, meaning the very real personal costs of the things that romney and ryan are talking about? and i think that's part of what the president needs to be doing. i think it's what the campaign is doing here in this ad is to say, if you're going to make this cut, let's talk about the reality of what that's going to mean for people. you want to, you know, go invade iran, okay. are we all ready to see more caskets coming into dover, delaware? are we really ready to send men and women in uniform to another front in the war? you're going to make all of these cuts and how is that going to add up? it's not going to add up. here are the places where those cuts are going to have to come from. i think bringing it back to real terms, because, again, i think romney won't have the answer essentially. david is right. he has 9 top line -- >> i don't agree with you. romney's answer is very clear, ask me on the 7th of november. >> his answer is always no, it's not. >> exactly. >> because i said to. >> karen, david, and richard, thank you both. thank you all. next, paul ryan can't stand the heat and it may on
everybody to do less well than they should. so i think now mitt romney and paul ryan are starting to pick up. host: what kind of ground game do you need to pick up ohio? guest: it is tougher for republicans because our vote is scattered in the rural counties, northwest ohio, eastern ohio now becoming more republican. it used to be more democratic. the democratic vote is concentrated in the northeast, i hope the county, in the cities of columbus and cincinnati. so they have an easier time. but led by the republican national committee, the ground game is very good this year. as far as gopac is concerned, we support state and local candidates. we're targeting state and local candidates in swing districts to turn out the votes from the bottom up, not the top down. host: explain that a little bit more. guest: we support the next generation of republicans, and these are republicans running primarily at the state and legislative level. we look for individuals that have leadership capabilities who someday might be speaker of the house or who would run for congress or senate sunday. those of the peop
of the romney/ryan campaign. if ron is able to beat biden, make better arguments on policy, then wow, that's two in a row, and there's more pressure on the president in the next debate. >> okay. about a month to go, little less than a month now. i think we've hit on some of the topics, but what needs to happen, talking about the presidential candidates again, what does the president need to do, what does mitt romney need to do? >> i think number one, they have to be aggressive. their campaigns are playing offense. mitt romney will talk about the economy a lot. he's going to give a foreign policy speech today. overall, it's about the economy. it's making the argument of who can better the economy, because it's ailing. they both agree the economy is ailing. who can fix it and make the arguments better? >> quick answer, does it hurt the president to be in hollywood when, or in california when it doesn't matter as much as virginia does now? or is it okay? >> i think he's got to raise money. but i do think it hurts him a little bit. not a game changer. >> bob cusack, you're a game changer. >> thank y
fought for our country. romney and ryan, first off, let's get something clear here once and for all, as far as the sequestered cuts go, it is not obama's thing, okay? it was congress and paul ryan's thing because they were too immature to act like grown-ups and make a deal, ok? obama had nothing to do with it. it was paul ryan and congress. guest: i do think that the one of the issues that people will be basing their vote on is the question of leadership at large and that is why you heard a lot about leadership from mitt romney and what kind of role obama is projecting and by extension what he is doing at home in guiding in shaping how we use natural resources. although the polls might not registered significance to a particular foreign policy issue, when it comes to the broader question of leadership, that is part of what people will be casting their vote on. there is an opportunity, as the mitt romney team has identified, to suggest criticism of president obama as a leader. host: president obama was at a fund-raiser in california last night. the medicaid program in ohio, when they see the romney/ryan budget when it hits the ground, he's going to lose. he's just not going to be able to carry enough independent voters. as i said on top of the auto rescue, we have people that have actually felt the obama policies help them. right down the supply chain in the auto industry here, you can go to places like the logistics company, the trucking company, the seat manufacturer, all the way down the line have benefited and they know, i was out at the plant gate the other day, they know it was obama sticking his neck out in 2009 to make sure that gm didn't go bankrupt and the autos didn't go bankrupt. >> i will be curious -- >> romney was on the wrong side of that. >> curious to see how the polling does when there is a good -- right? we're too close to the debate, we didn't have the good post-debate polls in the state of ohio yet to really flush that out. >> any swing state poll after the debate, except in colorado, which still shows obama with a four-point be edge there? >> in ohio we were in the field before the debate and i was in cincinnat
collection. which does not sound interesting as it is, but mitt romney picked paul ryan and the expectation among supporters would -- was that this would be a chance for him to outline a campaign with a whole set of policy decisions that would set him apart from the president, but in the past few weeks we have seen the campaign dynamics not changed that much. this is just one more issue on which the republicans are trying to be the president. host: is mitt romney going to focus more on what the president is doing wrong, or more on his own plan? caller: based on the release extroverts -- exurbs of the speech, it looks like they're trying to follow up on obama. there is not a huge gap there and the question for the president was from a couple of months ago, clearly the mitt romney campaign knows that there is more time to make some headway there. there is always the risk that by focusing on this before the vice presidential debate, even as both sides think that the economy is a top issue, you run into a risk of focusing on too many items as opposed to jobs and economic issues. host: there wil
